The Spinners

A new life was recently given to me allowing me to feel transformed, renewed and full of gratitude. I began to create new works thinking about how to express these feelings and the notion of transformation. I chose to use existing objects in a fresh way, which in an already cluttered physical world made more sense than using new, manufactured materials. To transform these objects into new art I made a mechanical device that takes them and spins them into a new and colorful life, beginning with discarded toys.

In a world that at times feels like it's spinning out of control, these works appear relevant beyond my personal story.

Saṃsāra - literally meaning "continuous flow” is the repeating cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth (reincarnation) within Hinduism, Buddhism, Bön, Jainism, Yoga and Taoism.

The Meat wheel

There’s a term for a Buddhist notion called samsara that refers to the continuing flow of life, the repeating cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth. In this work I am recycling objects in a timeless flow of life around and as if part of the Buddha. It's as if they are different incarnations of him as well as objects that may be familiar in our own lives.

The spinners fulfill a desire for expressing motion in sculpture, the intense motion of our world today. Having witnessed the results of the tornados in the south they also express the awesome energy and power of nature.
